She has, in a way, but not to the one she grew up in. Like most women visiting the house this Thursday night, Jackson was forced to grow up quickly after getting pregnant at a young age, 15 to be exact. While other teenagers were worrying about dances and parties, Jackson was fretting about what to do with, and how to support, her baby. Her parents hadn’t reached the age of retirement so both worked, and they expected her to take responsibility for her actions. “I was just a child myself, but my mom really didn’t have pity on me,” Jackson said. “She expected me to be grown because to her, I had made that choice.”
But the women in this household have a different take on things, something Jackson and other single mothers appreciate. The staff of Catholic Social Services of West Alabama doesn’t focus on the errors, but instead helps women learn the life-management skills they skipped while growing up through the Supporting Single Moms program. Many young, financially-struggling mothers learn to budget their money, get insurance coverage, ask questions at the doctor’s office and improve their parenting skills, and each one has a mentor who helps them through the process. “You kind of want to be like a mom to some of them because nobody’s ever had anyone show them the right way,” said Becky Latham, co-director of the program. “You just want to mother them, or you want to shake them.”
